Kyoto is one of most popular distention of tourist. There is many historical temples and shines.
In Kyoto, there was two tramway operaters. One of operators is Keifuku Electric Railway. Nickname of Keifuku Electric Railway is "嵐電(Randen)". Randen was born in 1910, and still operated today. Randen has two lines from downtown to western suburb. Network length is 11.0km with 1.6km on-street running section. There is many sightseeing spot along the lines of Randen. In the tourist season, trams are so crowded, and most trains are operated by coupled car.
One of operators was Kyoto City Transport Bureau. Tram of Kyoto City Transport Bureau was Japanese first tram. Network length in 1950s was 76.8km. However, all tram lines of Kyoto City Transport Bureau was abandoned at 1978. In 1970s, abolition of trams and construction of subways were thought solution of traffic problems. However, since 1978, traffic problems isn't still solved. Kyoto city has terrible traffic jam and much debt by subway construction.
I think that flood of cars kills charm of historical Kyoto city. Abolition of trams was shortsighted decision.
